Metalsmithing: Kiln Fired Enameling

Metalsmithing: Kiln Fired Enameling

Friday 1pm-4pm

In this workshop you will learn about and experience vitreous enameling, which is an ancient technique of fusing thin layers of glass to a metal surface at high temperature. This technique can be used to make beautiful, richly colored components for jewelry or other decorative art.

First we will apply finely ground glass to copper, and then learn how to safely fire the glass in an enameling kiln. Each person will make several test samples, before choosing a combination of glass colors and patterns to fire into a small square tile. We will then attach the copper tile to a wood base panel, for a unique handmade art piece ready to take home. Open to all levels of experience.
