Layers of Expression: A Printmaking Immersion (2 Days)

Layers of Expression: A Printmaking Immersion (2 Days)

Led by Theresa Wingert

Friday 9:00am-3:30pm / Saturday 9:00am-1:00pm

Step into a world of texture, color, and layering exploration in this 2-day printmaking workshop designed to spark your creativity. Led by Theresa Wingert, a passionate printmaker who believes in the power of hands-on discovery, this experience will guide you through two dynamic techniques: the delicate layering of chine-collé and the bold, expressive lines of linocut. This is a playground for experimentation, inviting artists to explore layers of texture, color, and form in printmaking. Its unpredictable and tactile nature ensures that no two prints are ever quite the same, making every piece of art unique.

Day 1:

We’ll start with the essentials, carving our way into linocut—a process that’s meditative as well as invigorating. We’ll explore mixing ink and creating color palettes, and you’ll learn how to shape your ideas into vibrant designs while experimenting with color and mark-making. In the afternoon, we’ll transition to chine-collé, a printmaking process where sheer, tissue-thin papers are incorporated into prints, adding delicate layers of color and texture into your work. Chine-collé introduces an additional element of visual interest, with the thin paper acting almost like a veil, softening or enhancing the printed image beneath.

Day 2:

We’ll weave these two techniques together, creating layered prints. Blending the two processes creates a sense of depth and complexity by combining materials with different physical qualities. The interplay between the semi-translucent chine-collé paper and the inked print can create a multi-dimensional effect; juxtaposing softer, more ethereal layers with bold, graphic spaces.  This is your chance to play, to take risks, and experiment with layers and color. Along the way you’ll receive personal guidance, from troubleshooting tricky moments to unlocking unexpected creative possibilities. Because of the delicate nature of the materials and the process, chine-collé often yields unexpected results, which can lead to organically beautiful discoveries in the final piece.
